My thoughts

Borders. Exclusion. Assimilation’s price? Immigrants carrying long shadows of borders on their backs. Limitations, language barrier, the nostalgia for their own fatherland. “I’m not from here. I’m not from there.” propels us into the process of blending in. Is there existence in that “between”? I see reflections of me in the social discourse. “Me” just defined among “others” by signifiers of race. What is the genesis of the exclusion? Do borders define our identity?  Is the pursuit of happiness smaller than a single grain in a child’s fistful of sand? Isn’t hope a very fragile word?

During my one-year residence as an internal therapist at a general hospital, I treated patients with PTSD resulting from what is known outside of Argentina as the “Falklands War”. It had a strong impact on me, not only for the limited possibilities of long-term treatment compressed to one year, but for the everyday difficulties they confronted.
